How to Build a Digital Course as a Coach or Expert

Hi, I’m Marne Semick, and today I’m going to share some simple, practical strategies for building a digital course that actually works for your clients—and for your business.

Creating a course can feel overwhelming, especially when you want to give all of your wisdom at once. But here’s the truth: your clients want results, and they want them fast. They don’t need you to stuff every lesson, every technique, or every story into your course. They need clarity, simplicity, and a roadmap that actually delivers transformation.

Here are the three key steps I recommend when building a course for coaches and experts:

1. Keep It Clear, Concise, and Results-Focused

People enroll in courses because they want a solution. They want to move from point A to point B without getting lost in unnecessary content. Avoid overloading your course with too much information. Instead, focus on delivering exactly what your audience needs to see results.

Be clear and concise in every module, every lesson, and every video. Each part of your course should move your students closer to the transformation they’re looking for.

2. Create a Structured Outline with Main Points and Supporting Points

Before you start recording, sit down and map out your course. Break it into sections, and make sure each section has:

One main point – This is the big idea of the section.

Three supporting points – These reinforce the main idea and give practical steps or exercises.

Within each section, start with a brief overview of what the student will learn. This helps them understand the journey they’re about to take and sets the stage for your content. A well-structured outline keeps you on track, makes your course easier to produce, and makes the learning experience seamless for your clients.

3. Give Your Students a Win Right Up Front

The first section of your course is critical. This is where you hook your students and show them that your course delivers real results. Make sure you include your strongest, most impactful content first. Give them a tangible win that they can implement immediately.

When students experience success early, they are more likely to stay engaged, complete the course, and get the transformation they came for. This sets the tone for the rest of the course and builds confidence in your expertise.

Final Tips

Don’t overcomplicate things—simplicity is powerful.

Structure your course with clarity so your clients know exactly what they’re learning.

Lead with a win to keep students engaged and motivated.
