Starting a coaching business is an exciting and transformative journey. Whether you're an expert in your field, a spiritual coach, or a life coach, launching your own business is a way to make a bigger impact on the world. But here’s the thing: It’s not as simple as just hanging a shingle and waiting for clients to flood in.
Many new coaches make mistakes that can delay or even derail their success. In today’s video, I’m going to walk you through the top 3 mistakes coaches make when starting their businesses, and share how you can avoid them so you can build the successful, thriving coaching business you’ve always dreamed of.
Mistake #1: The “If You Build It, They Will Come” Myth
One of the biggest mistakes I see new coaches make is believing that all they need to do is create an amazing coaching service, package, or program and then clients will magically appear. The truth is, just building your product or service is not enough.
While it's great to have an offering that you’re proud of, without proper marketing and outreach, you won’t get the attention or clients you need. This myth is especially prevalent among new coaches who assume that because their service is valuable, people will just find them. But the reality is that you need a solid marketing strategy to reach your ideal clients and continuously put your message out into the world.
Solution: Invest time in building an effective marketing strategy that includes content creation, lead generation, and client nurturing. You need to build an audience and actively engage with them so they trust you and see the value you offer. Building relationships is key.
Mistake #2: Not Defining a Clear Niche
Another mistake coaches make when starting their business is not defining a clear niche. A “one-size-fits-all” approach might sound appealing, but it usually results in a watered-down message that doesn’t resonate with anyone in particular. If you want to stand out in the crowded coaching industry, you need to be specific about who you’re serving.
Think about it: Who are your ideal clients? What are their specific pain points? What is the transformation you’re offering them? By narrowing your focus and specializing in a niche, you become an expert in that area, and you’ll be able to speak directly to the needs and desires of your target audience.
Solution: Take time to really think about your ideal client and their unique needs. Don’t be afraid to niche down and find your specialty. Once you have a clear niche, your marketing messages, content, and offers will become far more compelling.
Mistake #3: Trying to Do Everything on Your Own
As an entrepreneur, it’s tempting to think that you need to do everything yourself. You’re passionate about your coaching, but when it comes to marketing, tech, and sales, you might try to take on all the responsibilities yourself. This is a classic mistake and one that can lead to burnout and frustration.
Solution: Know that it’s okay to ask for help and invest in support. Whether that’s hiring a business coach, outsourcing technical tasks (like setting up your website or email systems), or hiring a virtual assistant to manage your admin tasks, delegating is key to scaling your business. You don’t have to do it all alone!
